Digital Guardian (Fortra)

Product: Fortra Digital Guardian (formerly Digital Guardian, acquired by Fortra)

Microsoft Purview DLP

Adjacent vendors worth knowing

Several vendors sit adjacent to the core DLP category but are routinely evaluated in DLP buying processes. They are not full DLP suites in the traditional sense but provide overlapping capabilities.

Varonis offers data security and governance focused on file shares, SaaS, and cloud data stores. Varonis was named a Leader in the Forrester Wave: Data Security Platforms, Q1 2025.

Google offers data security capabilities through Google Cloud (including Sensitive Data Protection, formerly Cloud DLP). Google was named a Leader in the same Forrester Wave.

Imperva (a Thales company) provides data security focused on databases and structured data, with adjacencies to DLP rather than direct endpoint or email DLP coverage.

Evaluating DLP solutions

The most useful path through this market is structured proof-of-concept testing against your actual data and channels. The following steps are sourced from common buyer guidance in the analyst reports cited above.

Define your requirements before engaging vendors. Document your sensitive data types, the channels through which data leaves your organization, your regulatory obligations, and your architectural constraints. This helps you compare like to like rather than letting each vendor steer the conversation toward its strengths.

Run a proof of concept with real data. Deploy each candidate in monitor mode against production traffic. Use sample test data with names, identifiers, and dates of birth to validate detection accuracy across web uploads, encrypted web uploads, email, and file transfers. Measure false positive rates yourself. Vendor-published benchmarks are useful as a starting point but should be validated against your own data. A 1 percent false positive rate across millions of transactions still produces thousands of alerts per day.

Assess management overhead. Console usability, policy authoring workflow, incident triage, and reporting matter more than feature counts in day-to-day operations. Cloud-native platforms generally have lower infrastructure overhead, while on-premises or hybrid platforms typically offer more customization.

Test endpoint performance impact. Deploy each candidate’s endpoint agent on representative machines and measure CPU, memory, and user-perceptible latency. Endpoint performance is a frequent driver of internal pushback that derails DLP rollouts.

Evaluate vendor stability. The market is consolidating. Review each vendor’s financial health, recent acquisition history, and product roadmap continuity. Acquisitions can mean product disruption, deprecation, or forced migration.

Is there a current Gartner Magic Quadrant for DLP?

No. Gartner discontinued the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise DLP after 2017. Gartner now publishes a Market Guide for Data Loss Prevention, most recently updated in April 2025. Which DLP solution is best?

How long does DLP deployment take?

What is the difference between DLP and DSPM?
